In Florida, a welcome feature in many homes is a pool. But! It takes a lot of upkeep and energy to keep a pool in tip-top shape.
At our latest property, the pool was neglected for quite some time. The first step in any pool repair is to drain the pool - but be careful! Draining a pool that is really close to a body of water or high water table, especially during the rainy season, could result in a gunite pool (like this one) coming out of the ground. Consult an expert before draining. It's also important to be sure you're not draining water that could be considered toxic into the water table. Check with your local water utility if there are concerns about the quality of the water in your pool.
POOL BEFORE REHAB:

After you safely drain the pool, you can begin an assessment and repairs. For us, it started with a good acid wash. Be extremely careful with an acid wash. Wear proper PPE and consult an expert if you've never used these chemicals before and follow all instructions and directions.
From here, repairs can begin on the plaster. Various companies make plaster pool repair kits. Ensure you get the right material, mix it properly and apply as directed.
Finally, ensure all of the repairs are completely smooth and dry before filling the pool back with water. And, remember to get pool chemicals in the water soon after refilling to ensure proper balance of chemicals in the water to keep it clear and ready for swimmers.
If you do it correctly, your pool, like the one in our latest flip, will come out looking great!
